Misao Jo Memorial and Sakura season in Japan

Last month I had the privilege of traveling to Osaka to attend the memorial ceremony for the founder of SAORI weaving, Misao Jo.

Misao Jo, 1913-2018

As I arrived in Japan late in March 2018, the Sakura season had just started. Unusually early this year, but a wonderful setting for the Misao Jo Memorial service in Izumi.

We were greeted by the most beautifully dressed people and sign posts along the way to the venue. Approximately 350-400 weavers, friends and family had gathered from all over the globe to celebrate the long life and many achievements of Misao Jo. Record-size pieces of cloth painstakingly produced by the worldwide SAORI community were displayed together as a lasting tribute to Misao, along with lively speeches, photo/film projections, laughs, tears, music and of course, a fashion show.

It is undeniable that Misao Jo has started a worldwide movement of self-styled weavers who will continue to be inspired by her philosophy and guidance for generations to come. Thank you Misao Jo.
